Home Stay Kyabirwa
Travellers,
backpackers and tourists who don't want to be just ordinary tourists
but don't want to volunteer at the school have the opportunity to stay
with Moses Owino, the volunteer project manager, and his extended
family. By doing so, they will experience life in Africa in a way that
isn't fully possible by staying in a hotel or guest house or even
camping.
Guests
will also have the pleasure of knowing that the small profit from their
accommodation fee will go straight to Kyabiwa Primary School funds to
buy resources and develop the school for the benefit of the current
children and future generations. See how this is making a difference by going to our 'Thanks for 2010 page'.
Guests
will live in the family compound in their own room with new bed,
mosquito net, bedside table, chair, bookcase and hanging for clothes. There are showers, toilets and electricity. Breakfast will be provided. Guests may also have lunch and dinner. Lunch
is 2000 shillings - less than $1 and dinner is 7000 shillings - just
over $3.
It's the cheapest 'own room' accommodation in the area.
Photos of the family, their compound and the accommodation may be seen on the
Volunteer Accommodation page of this website.
Accommodation including breakfast is just 33,500 shillings a night - approximately $14.
Guests will be allowed to visit the school to meet the staff and children.
They will inevitably be invited to visit local people in their homes.
They
will be able to go to church with the local families - there are
several churches in the area. St Kizito's in Bujagali has lovely
singing. Even if you are not religious, it is one way to meet the local
people and get to know them a little.
Guests will be able to participate in any of the household and small holding activities if they wish.
They
will witness life as it moves in and out of the compound - the weekly
cloth and material salesman, the knife grinder, the people coming to buy
simple medications from Moses, the extended family visiting etc etc.
All such activities are entirely optional.
In short, just living with the family is such a fascinating experience that you may not want to venture far from home!
But if you do, there are many attractions for you to visit in the local area. Here are some of them:
Jinja town
Jinja market
The Source of the Nile
The
Bujagali Falls - see the spectacular falls before they are drowned by
the new dam, white water rafting, kayaking, boat trip on the river
The site of the new Bujagali Dam
The swimming pool at the Nile Resort
Visit one or more of the islands on Lake Victoria
Visit Masese and Soweto slums - but please do not do so without a local guide or you will get lost!
Sipi Falls
Visit Kampala for the day and see the Ndere Troupe in their Saturday evening show before returning home to the family
If
you think you would enjoy living with the family and having a true
experience of Ugandan daily life, rather than just being an average
tourist, please email Moses through the Contact page or using Moses' email owinomoses22@yahoo.com
Please state that your enquiry is about Homestay so that Moses knows that you don't want to volunteer.
